Friday Night Basketball
Every Friday night when school is open, the thud, thud, thud of a basketball and the court chatter typical of adolescent and post adolescent males can be heard coming from the Edmund W. Miles Middle School in Amityville.
For several years now the Living Hope Fellowship Church has sponsored Open Gym for males 14 years and up. Young men who would otherwise not have a recreational outlet, play basketball from 7 pm to 9 pm. Some are members of the local school team--most are not on teams, others are parents and spectators. They come because they love the sport. The court opens with unified prayer by the young men after warm up. By the end of the evening, as many as 36 people pass through.
Grandma used to say "the devil finds work for idle hands to do". The Open Gym program provides something other than the streets and the mall for young people. In addition, spiritual values are fostered and encouraging words for success in school, college, and work are given by the coordinator. A nominal donation for the scholarship fund is accepted.
